Overview

The western tip of Europe is steeped in ancient history, creating a rich base to launch a great summer. You'll get to explore Portuguese culture and history while learning to speak Portuguese. Courses are taught in English at CIEE Lisbon and are complemented with immersive co-curricular activities designed to increase intercultural understanding. 

Bring your interest in art, literature, and cinema to the vibrant city of Lisbon this summer! Portugal's coastal capital is the perfect place to spend a summer living and learning abroad. Get a firsthand perspective on Lisbon's deep-rooted history and further your education in courses including gastronomy, culture, and politics.

Eligibility

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

Academic Program

In Session I, students learn and engage with Portugal’s gastronomy and its impact on local culture. In session II, students explore the international financial environment with visits to economic and political institutions to learn about business ethics or learn reflect about contemporary Portuguese history through cultural immersion while exploring its arts, literature and cinema. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings.

Excursions

While in Lisbon you will have the opportunity to:
  • Take advantage of Lisbon’s vibrant theater and historic opera house, plus concert venues, galleries, a dynamic cinemathèque, and summer festivals.
  • See more of the country with excursions to Sintra, Mafra, or Óbidos.

Housing

Study abroad students can choose to live in Portuguese homestays, or in a residence hall with a mix of CIEE, local, and international students. Students live in single, double, or triple rooms and share kitchens and common areas.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

Program fee includes tuition, orientation, airport greeting, activities and excursions.
