Overview
Why study abroad in one great European city during the summer when you can explore the cultural heritage of Paris and Rome?
In this eight week program, you will explore how art and architecture have affected urban development, life, and culture in these fascinating European capitals, and how museums preserve, develop, study, and display their collections for the benefit of the public.
Start your program in Rome, where you'll begin to appreciate how these cities have developed around the central idea of cultural heritage and patrimony. You will learn about the development of the history of art as you move chronologically from the Eternal City (ancient art) to the City of Light (modernism), with an included multi-day excursion to Tuscany intended to bridge the gap between medieval and Renaissance transitions in the social functions and aesthetics of art and museums. Your courses will integrate class time with course-related trips to art and cultural management institutions, including visits to well-known museums such as the Vatican Museum and the Musée d’Orsay.
During your coursework, you'll study how art, architecture, and monuments have, at different times and in different ways, affected life and culture in Rome and Paris. You will also examine past and current strategies adopted to preserve, enhance, and communicate cultural heritage, and how major challenges facing museums in the 21st century can be addressed.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
You will enroll in two courses for a total of 6 credits. The Museums & Beyond courses are designed to help you discover the richness, complexity, and variety of museums and cultural preservation in three capital cities.
Students will select one course in each location, based on your interest or curricular needs. All courses are 3 credits and are taught at the IES Center by local faculty. Possible course offerings include:
- Public Spaces, Private Lives: The Splendour of Roman Art
- Rome as a Living Museum
- History of Paris in Art and Architecture
- 19th Century Art: Impressionism and Post-Impressionism

Excursions
This program includes exciting course-related trips that allow you to learn first-hand about the challenges of managing and preserving cultural heritage in the context of a modern and global economy.

Housing
Students will be housed in shared apartments with other program participants in both locations. All housing is arranged by IES.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
Program fee includes tuition, housing, insurance, field trips, orientation and support from IES staff.
