Overview
Situated on the equator, Singapore is a global financial center and a major business and transportation hub for the Southeast Asian region. Given the city-state's importance on an international scale, "The Garden City" is the perfect place to take your studies abroad! Spend one six-week block (or up to two blocks) of your summer diving deeply into Asia's diversity while honing your academic skills and networking with international contacts.
The island-state of Singapore lies one degree north of the equator in Southeast Asia and is a melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Arabic, and Indian cultures and religions. Since gaining independence in 1965, Singapore has become a flourishing city-state that excels in trade and education and is considered a model to developing nations. Singapore is one of the most competitive economies in the world and a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
When class is in session, you will learn from instructors at CIEE Singapore in courses across a wide range of subject areas, including business, communication, community health, international relations, STEM, and more. Outside the classroom, you'll have plenty of time to explore Singapore's cultural and architectural heritage, world-class food scene, suburban farming, and iconic landmarks, like Merlion Park, which is home to a 70-ton merlion statue!

Academic Program
Purdue students can choose to participate in Block I, Block II, or both blocks for a longer program during the summer.
Students take two credit-bearing courses per summer block. Students will learn the intercultural skills needed to succeed in an increasingly globalized and interconnected world. In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offering.
Summer course offerings may vary, but tend to include business and liberal arts classes such as Doing Business in Asia-Pacific, The Making of Modern Singapore, Intercultural Communication, Culture and Cuisine in Singapore, and International Marketing. Computer Science classes are not available in the summer.
Students may also enroll in an optional non-credit course, Survival Malay.
Click here to see planned course offerings, and note you must take your courses in-person through CIEE.
Excursions
Ample activities and day trips will be offered to immerse yourself in Singaporean culture and historical heritage.
You might:
- Explore the capital city of Indonesia's Special Region of Yogyakarta.
- Experience the cultural richness of the port of Malacca in Indonesia.
- Learn about hawker cuisine and the heritage behind street food in Singapore.
- Visit Sentosa Island History Museum and learn about WWII battles on this strategic island.
- Explore the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve trail, the only primary forest in Singapore.
Housing
Students live in a hotel room in a location accessible to public transportation. Each hotel room consists of a private bathroom with shower facilities and two single beds. The hotel also has a 24-hour concierge to assist students.
Housing includes a twin room in a shared apartment inside the hotel, located within 45 minutes by subway or bus to CIEE Singapore or Singapore Management University. The hotel conveniently features a swimming pool, fitness room, a common area for studying, and complimentary Wi-Fi access.
Students will have access to inexpensive meal options for their breakfast, lunch, and dinner at food courts, coffee shops, and our UNESCO-inscribed hawker centers. Like Singapore’s diverse and multi-racial culture, students will be able to find and explore delicious cuisines from the different ethnic groups or nationalities in the hawker centers.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program. Program and housing fee includes tuition for one block (6 credits), housing, orientation, airport greeting, excursions and activities.
The costs listed are for one summer block. If participating in both summer blocks, you will be charged an additional $304.70 for the study abroad fee, and should plan for the costs to be doubled.
