Overview
Writers in Ireland have used words and images to inspire, inform, persuade, and entertain for centuries—think W.B. Yeats’ celebrated lines, James Joyce’s “universal city” in Ulysses, the stage of the Abbey Theatre, and the blogs of The Irish Times. Through study of contemporary Irish authors, as well as those of the past, this program is designed to inspire and challenge writers to elevate their skills to the next level.
Whether you approach writing as a future vocation or as a creative outlet, our courses help you discover and explore your voice and hone your craft. From short story writing and visual narratives to poetry, non-fiction, and playwriting, our courses cover a wide variety of styles and genres.
Customize your course schedule with area studies courses from our Irish Studies program or a writing-focused part-time internship or community-based learning placement at no additional cost. What's more, each semester, students compile an anthology of creative works. You have the option to help create the anthology through the course Homespun Sails.
Attend our four-day Writers Retreat where you focus exclusively on your writing in an environment conducive to reflection, renewal, and inquiry. The retreat takes place at an undisclosed location, revealed to you just before you embark. Though designed for independent work, the retreat also includes workshopping opportunities, site visits, and guest speakers.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
You enroll in 15-19 credits per semester. Academic programming is scheduled five days a week.
- Writers Program courses (optional, 3 credits each)
- Courses from our Irish Studies Program (optional, 3 credits each)
- Internship placement and seminar (optional, 3 credits)
- Community-Based Learning placement and seminar (optional, 3 credits)
With course offerings like Irish Communal Identity, Irish Playwriting, Photo/Graphic: Shaping Visual Narratives, The Shadows We Cast: Writing the Irish Short Story and Write Here, Write Now: An Introduction to Immersion Writing among others - you can grow in your writing an explore Irish culture to learn more about where you're living.

Excursions
Included in the program is a 4-day Writers Retreat - a journey to a secret destination to focus exclusively on your writing in an environment conducive to reflection, renewal, and inquiry.
IES Abroad also arranges other field trips, partially subsidized by IES. Destinations may vary, but possible locations include Northern Ireland, and a day-trip that students get to vote on.
In addition, course-related trips will complement your academic studies and you may visit local museums, historical buildings, theaters, or other sites of interest.
Housing
Student housing is arranged by IES and you will live in a residence hall. Each student will have their own bedroom and bathroom, and share living space and kitchen with others in the apartment-style residence hall. No meals are included.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program. Program Fee includes tuition, orientation, group activities and the Writers Retreat trip.
