Overview

IES-Dublin: History, Politics and Social Change

Experience life in the cultural and economic heart of Ireland this summer. Full of friendly people and easy to get around, Dublin is the perfect place to study Ireland’s rich heritage and contemporary culture.

Discover Dublin’s fascinating history and exciting theatre, music, literature, and art scenes. As you get to know the city’s winding streets and unmistakable charm, you learn about Irish culture through courses in the humanities and social sciences that focus on themes of tradition, change, and identity in modern Ireland. Choose from a plethora of IES Abroad courses taught by local, expert faculty.

IES Abroad Dublin organizes course-related trips that complement your academics and help you build your general knowledge of Irish culture and society. These trips include walking tours of Dublin's significant architectural, literary, and political markers.

Eligibility

IES-Dublin: History, Politics and Social Change

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: none

Students interested in completing courses while abroad from Purdue colleges or departments that are not listed above should discuss this with their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.


Academic Program

Take unique courses that explore Irish cultural studies and history through an in-depth and hands-on approach. Our Irish professors enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

Create your own academic experience by enrolling in two courses for a total of 6 credits.

Classes may include options such as:

  • Irish Communal Identity
  • Celtic Myth and Legend in Early Ireland
  • Irish Culture Through Film
  • History of Ireland
  • Irish Literature

Excursions

Even though your adventure starts in Dublin, field trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country. You share a portion of the cost with IES Abroad.

Destinations can vary and are subject to change, but past options have included a 3-day trip to West Ireland and a day trip to Causey Farm. 


Housing

Housing is arranged by IES. You live in a private student residence with up to seven other IES Abroad students each having your own bedroom and bathroom within the apartment. No meals are provided, but you'll share a fully equipped kitchen, plus a living area. Mixed-gender and single-gender apartments are available.

The private student residence is completely furnished and has WiFi along with other amenities, including on-site laundry facilities and 24-hour reception and security. The residence hall is within walking distance or a short bus ride to the IES Abroad Center. Residents are invited to attend a range of social events such as mindfulness workshops, movie nights, volunteer days, and more.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
 
Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.
Program fee includes tuition, orientation and on-site support.
