Overview
Lights, camera, action! It's time to put your directing, producing, or writing skills to the test. Discover first-hand what draws the global film industry to New Zealand with this exciting program at the University of Auckland. Receive an immersive experience in a production process based on practice in the professional television industry.
The University of Auckland, founded in 1883, is the only New Zealand member of the prestigious Universitas 21, a global consortium of major universities engaged in research, academic exchange, and quality benchmarking. With about 40,000 students (including 4,000+ international students from 93 countries) the University fosters a diverse and challenging academic environment.
The University is centrally located in the heart of Auckland and covers an impressive 39 acres of land. The city campus has easy access to the cultural and commercial amenities of the country’s largest city, while harbor views and nearby parks add to its attractiveness. The IES Abroad program is run out of the International Office, conveniently located on campus in the Alfred Nathan house.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
You will be in a small intensive course working to create the pilot episode of a serial drama. Everyone in the course has a specific role, such as director, producer, or writer. Acting roles will not be available in this program. Following an industry-style production schedule, the course is designed to give you practical experience in the understanding of the collaborative and co-operative nature of the making of drama for film, television and digital platforms, with strict time limits.
The program places a special focus on digital and new media as the method of distribution for your production. As well as developing technical skills in multi-camera television production, single camera location shooting and digital editing, you will be introduced to the processes of script breakdowns, casting and directing actors.
Production team roles will be allocated in the first week of the course. The role you get will depend on your preference as well as your own skills and experience and the mix of skills and experience across the group. This intensive course requires a full-time commitment. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with an additional eight-to-ten hours' studio time required per week. In addition to time spent in class, you will also spend many hours outside of class each week in the studio,in script production, casting, on-location filming, post-production, editing, and on field trips.
Excursions
Even though your adventure starts in Auckland, IES field trips take you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of your host country. Exact opportunities may vary, but could include excursions such as a two-day trip to Waiheke Island, day trip to a nearby location, or even one-off activities to do within Auckland.
Housing
You will live in off-campus housing in a single room with access to a kitchen. No meals are provided. WiFi access will be available, though it may carry an additional cost.
