Overview

CIEE-Florence: Semester in Florence

Home to a treasure trove of Renaissance jewels and a rich cultural heritage, Florence is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and is rooted in artistic tradition. The city’s historic and artistic richness makes Florence an appealing choice for study abroad students from all backgrounds. From its renowned art galleries and museums, such as the Uffizi Gallery, to its unrivaled architecture, like the Duomo, Florence is a student-friendly city boasting endless opportunities to immerse yourself in the local language and culture.

When you study abroad in Florence, you’ll call central Italy home. Here, in the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, you’ll enjoy views of stunning rolling hills, explore farms and vineyards, appreciate timeless art by the likes of Michaelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, and enjoy the local rustic Tuscan cuisine. With mesmerizing views at every turn, your time studying abroad in Florence will be nothing short of spectacular!

Eligibility

CIEE-Florence: Semester in Florence

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: none

Specifically from: HDFS, HK, PUBH, and SLHS (HHS)

Excursions

  • Enjoy excursions to iconic Italian towns like the eternal city of Rome or the university town of Bologna
  • Visit important cultural and historical landmarks in Tuscany, including Siena or Pisa
  • Explore the Chianti region and its wineries

Housing

Apartments: Students stay in furnished apartments in single or double rooms located within a 20-minute walk to CIEE Florence. Apartments have access to a kitchen and shared common spaces. They are located in safe areas with plenty of shopping and eating options, with direct access to supermarkets, restaurants, and public transport.

Residence Hall: Residence halls are located near the city center, and students stay in single rooms. The average walking distance can be up to 30 minutes. Students who live in the residence hall should expect to use public transportation to get to and from the center of Florence.

Homestays: Students live with an Italian-speaking family, with or without another CIEE student, and immerse themselves in the city’s language and culture. The average walking distance can be up to 30 minutes. Each student has an individual room.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

The Program and Housing Fees include: Tuition, on-site orientation, housing, and excursions.
