Program Description
Spend four weeks in Manizales, Colombia, and experience Spanish and Colombian culture beyond the classroom! This Summer Study Abroad program takes place at the University of Caldas, located in the beautiful Andes Mountains in Colombia’s famous coffee-growing region.
You will take courses taught in Spanish by professors from the University of Caldas and Purdue University, with credits counting toward your Spanish major or minor. By living with a Colombian host family, you will have the opportunity to practice Spanish every day, experience local traditions and customs, and become part of the community.
Whether you are already comfortable speaking Spanish or want to become more confident communicating in real-life situations, this program offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the language, explore Colombia, make new friends, and see the world from a different perspective.

Academic Credit
Earn up to six credits toward your Spanish major or minor while learning Spanish from professors at both the University of Caldas and Purdue University.
Students will earn 6 credits by selecting two of the following courses:
- SPAN 202: Spanish Level IV - This course will be taught by a Purdue's TA -- 3 credits
- SPAN 301: Spanish Level V - This course will be taught by a Purdue's professor -- 3 credits
- Colombian Culture & Civilization - This course is mandatory and will be taught by a local professor -- 3 credits
- Colombian Contemporary Art - This course will be taught by a local professor -- 3 credits
Eligibility
Students must have at least SPAN 201 before traveling.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
US$4,900 (approx.), excluding airfare from the U.S. to Manizales. Students will arrive and depart from Pereira and travel to Manizales, located 60 minutes from Pereira. The cost ($4,900) includes ground-trip transport from Pereira to Manizales and back to Pereira. Purdue's study abroad leader oversees this transportation.
