Program Description
The Summer Study Abroad program in Colombia is a four-week program that takes place at the University of Caldas in the city of Manizales. Manizales is a university city located in the Andes Mountains, in the coffee-growing region of Colombia. Credits count toward the major and minor in Spanish, and courses are taught in Spanish by professors from the University of Caldas and Purdue. Students live with host families. This is an excellent opportunity for Purdue students to improve their Spanish communication skills and learn about the customs and traditions of Latin American culture.
Academic Credit
Students may take up to 9 credit hours. Credits count toward the major and minor in Spanish, and courses are taught in Spanish by professors from the University of Caldas and Purdue.
Students will earn 6 credits by selecting two of the following courses:
- SPAN 20200: Spanish Level IV - 3 credits
- SPAN 301: Spanish Level V - 3 credits
- SPAN 483: Colombia Politics and Society - 3 credits
- SPAN 398 / 498: Colombian Contemporary Art - 3 credits
Students may earn an additional 3 credits:
- SPAN 398: Service Learning - 3 credits
Eligibility
Students must have at least SPAN 201 before traveling.
All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
