Program Description

We invite you to join us for a cultural immersive experience in Ghana! During our time in Ghana, we will explore Ghanaian culture, politics, cuisine, history, and so much more. This study abroad experience will delve into the rich cultural and historical links between the West African nation and the African Diaspora.

Passport: A valid passport with an expiration date beyond December 2024 is required to travel to Ghana. Proof of a valid passport or passport application submission is required for official acceptance into the Emerging Leaders Ghana study abroad program. If you currently do not have a valid passport (expiring after 2024), please apply for a passport as soon as possible. Students interested in participating in the Emerging Leaders Ghana study abroad are strongly encouraged to submit their passport application by Tuesday, October 10. Passports are currently taking 10-13 weeks to be processed. Do not delay. You can begin your passport application by visiting the U.S. Passport website here
 
Ghana Entry Visa: Ghana requires all visitors to have a Ghanaian entry visa. A valid passport is required in order to obtain a Ghanaian entry visa. You will be required to provide your program leader (Victoria Parker) with your passport and standard passport-size photo by January 19, 2024. The photo must meet all the requirements listed under the "Photographs" section here. Be sure to submit a jpeg version of the photo in the study abroad portal. Our office will submit your Ghanaian entry visa application on your behalf.

Yellow Fever Vaccine: The Yellow Fever vaccine is required to enter Ghana. You are responsible for scheduling your appointment and paying for the vaccine. Depending on your insurance plan, some of the vaccine costs may be covered by your provider. PUSH offers the vaccine for $232.51. If you choose to receive your vaccine through PUSH, you will be required to pay the PUSH travel visit fee of $32.48. You can schedule your appointment by calling the Purdue University Student Health Service (PUSH)
 
COVID-19 Vaccine: Proof of two COVID-19 vaccine doses is required to enter Ghana. Submit proof in the study abroad portal by January 19, 2024.

Academic Credit

Instructional Class: This program requires students to attend an instructional class before the Ghana study abroad program. Students will be required to attend class on Tuesdays from 4:30-5:20pm on March 19, 26 and April 2, 9, 16, 23.

Maymester Course: AAS 373: Ghana in the African Diaspora (3 credits, Pass/Not Pass)
Check with your academic advisor to determine what course requirement AAS 373 will fulfill in your plan of study. 

Eligibility

Must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at Purdue University's West Lafayette campus.

Priority will be given to Emerging Leader Scholars.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated Cost: $2,200 
The estimated cost covers: flight, international travel insurance, Ghana entry visa, meals in Ghana, and yellow fever vaccine (if not covered by insurance). To assist with cost, students are encouraged to apply for the Purdue MOVES Scholarship.
