Program Description

THIS PROGRAM IS ONLY OPEN TO PRE-VETERINARY STUDENTS WHO ARE PART OF THE COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE VET SCHOLARS PROGRAM AND CURRENT FIRST YEAR VETERINARY NURSING STUDENTS.

This program seeks to introduce pre-veterinary and nursing students to the intricacies of veterinary medicine practice in Zimbabwe, focusing on exploring the contrasts in urban, livestock, and wildlife veterinary medicine. The program touches on urban small animal veterinary practice in Harare, cattle and livestock veterinary practice in Gweru and primary wildlife management and conservation initiatives in Hwange National Park, and Victoria Falls. Students will meet and work alongside trained field guides and rangers, conservationists, veterinarians, and wildlife researchers, as well as local community members to understand the complexities of veterinary practice - with a particular focus on ecosystem health and human-wildlife conflict. By understanding the issues around human-wildlife conflict, students will be encouraged to consider holistic approaches to veterinary practice and conservation that promote ecosystem health through coexistence between humans and nature.
