Program Description

The course will cover fundamental concepts of the dynamics of roller coaster design. Including, but not limited to history of roller coasters, and a discussion of modern roller coaster design.  Understand the governing mathematical and physical foundations of modern roller caster design.  Develop and simulate both planar and 3D roller coaster tracks

Learning Outcomes:

1. Develop the kinematic and kinetics for various roller coaster components such as the track and cart.
2. Analytically design planar tracks for a given set of design criteria.
3. Understand 3D motion in roller coaster design.

Proposed Schedule: 

                May 11- Depart USA

                May 12-Arrive Dublin, transfer to housing in Tallaght, Ireland (just outside of Dublin City).  Housing will be at the Maldron Hotel in Tallaght. 

                May 13- Orientation, Dublin City tour, Welcome Dinner

                May 14-17-Class 9am -12pm each week day (class space is at Technical University of Dublin) free evenings, 2-3 cultural activities in Dublin will be scheduled during non-class hours

                May 18-19 Free weekend

                May 20-24- Class 9am -12pm each week day, free evenings

                May 25-Class trip to Emerald Park to see Wooden Roller Coaster (included in program fees)

                May 26- Free day

                May 27-30-Class each day, Farewell Meal on May 30

                May 31-Everyone free to leave

**Please note that breakfast is included daily, dinner is included each week night (no dinner on weekends).

**Students will stay at the Maldron Hotel in Tallaght.  Class is within walking distance at the Technical University of Dublin in Tallaght.

Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for ME 49700. This is a tech elective for ME students.  All other students must check with their academic advisors to see how this course can be used in their plan of study.

Eligibility

Open to any Engineering student and related majors in good academic standing.  Prof. Gibert will make all acceptance decisions.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated cost is : $5400  This includes hotel, a welcome and farewell dinner,  Breakfast each day and dinner each week night (no dinner on weekends),  25 Euro LEAP card, all ground transportation for excursions, all activities and excursions on the itinerary with entrance fees, 3 academic credits, and international health insurance. 

Additional Costs:  Round trip airfare, passport, meals, personal excursions, and personal spending money.
