Overview
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, has a rich history influenced by more than 800 years of Danish settlement. Copenhagen is rare in that it combines the economic, scientific, and cultural life of a modern city with a relaxed, small town atmosphere.
DIS administrative and classroom buildings are located in the heart of Medieval Copenhagen. Facilities include but are not limited to a reference and student library, student lounges, computer labs, a student information desk, and student support services.
Scandinavian furniture design has a deep history of considering people, culture, material, and society in design development. The course gives you the opportunity to explore this particular relationship and to grow your individual design capabilities through studio assignments, lectures, Field Studies, and workshop activity producing your own furniture prototype. This course is taught vertically, and expectations relate to you as an individual student.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.
Prerequisites: Enrollment in a professional school or department of architecture or design. Two spatial design studios at university level. Experience with stationary power tools and hand tools.
Additional Portfolio Requirements: Examples of studio work in a portfolio to be submitted to studio instructor at the beginning of the semester. This will allow the professor to become acquainted with the design skills of each student.
This program cannot accept students who plan to participate after graduation.

Academic Program
On the DIS semester program, students will take between 12-15 credits. All students will take the core course Furniture Design Studio (6 credits), and then add additional courses to their schedule to reach a minimum of 12 credits.

Excursions
A week-long
study tour to Sweden and/or Finland as well as a
core course week to western Denmark are included and required.
Housing
DIS offers several housing options, and helps students pick their preferred option. Options include homestays with a local family, a Kollegium (similar to a student dorm living with both DIS students and other local or international students), Living and Learning Communities, or a residential community with other DIS students.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program. The DIS program fee includes: Full tuition and administrative fees; rental of a complete set of textbooks & photocopied handouts; insurance; all field study events; use of DIS facilities, including library and computer labs; and study tours as described on the DIS website. Note that on study tours, one meal per day is on your own.
