Program Description

Join Prof. Thomas Siegmund in Rome in May 2025 for ME 489 Introduction to Finite Element Analysis.  The course ME 489 is a technical elective in the School of Mechanical Engineering. Finite Element Analysis is a method and skillset of significant importance for innovative product design, not only for mechanical engineers, but for engineers across disciplines. 

Proposed Itinerary:  Subject to change due to availability of activities

May 11- Students depart the USA for Rome

May 12- Arrive in Rome, transfer to shared apartments (Purdue students in apartments only)

May 13- Orientation, Rome city tour, Welcome meal

May 14-16- Class 9am-12pm, lunch, afternoon homework or help sessions.  Free evenings

May 17-18- Free weekend (day trip to Pompeii may be on Saturday but it's TBD)

May 19-23- Class 9am-12pm, lunch, afternoon homework or help sessions.  Free evenings 

May 24-25-Free weekend

May 26-30-Class 9am-12pm, lunch, afternoon homework or help sessions.  Free evenings.  Farewell Dinner on May 30

May 31- Students free to leave any time.

*Included in program fees:

  Day trip to Pompeii that includes lunch, Survival Italian Language workshop, Guided walking tour of Rome, Guided visit to Roman Aqueducts, Guided visit to Baths of Diocletian, Bike ride on Appian Way

**Please note that students will be housed in shared apartments or student residences throughout Rome.  Due to the Jubilee year in Rome, housing is in high demand.  A typical commute to the class site can be anywhere from 15-40 mintues walking or by public transportation.  

 

 


Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for ME 48900.  This course has a prerequisite of ME 32300.  Students earning a B or better in ME 270 but haven't completed ME 323 may be eligible.  Please email Prof. Siegmund if you are unsure if you qualify.  Students outside of ME could be eligible with the proper background.  Email Prof. Siegmund to discuss. 

*A guideline of a 3.0 GPA will be used, however, your entire academic history will be considered when making an acceptance decision.

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated price is $5,600 Program fees include:  Housing (shared apartments), Academic credits, airport pick-up upon arrival, Welcome and Farewell meals, day trip to Pompeii, cultural excursions on the itinerary, International Health Insurance.

Additional expenses:  Airfare, meals, personal travel, Passport, and Visa (If required).

Application Deadline

Students will be accepted on a rolling basis until the course is filled.  20 spots available.
