Program Description

The course objective for the Energy and Motorsports in Northern Italy course is to expose students to the intersecting point of energy technologies and the motorsports industry in one of the most iconic regions in the world for automotive innovation. It would explore aspects of the education of Italian engineers and industry leaders in general, specifics on problem-solving and communication methods used in this country's energy and automobile sector, and the research important to the universities of Italy and its overall economy. Designing and manufacturing processes of technologies for energy-saving and high-performance vehicles with a focus on motorsports and other industries will be discussed.

**Resume and Essay must be uploaded as part of the application process.  In your 500 (max) word essay, describe why you want to particpate in this program and how it will help with your future study or work plans.  Upload these documents on your My Study Abroad page by December 1.

**Minimum GPA is 3.0.  Acceptance decisions will be made in January 2025 after fall 2024 grades are posted. Deposit will be due after acceptance.

May 19-Visit to Politechnic in Milan, Welcome Dinner

May 20- Visit to Brembo

May 21-Factory tour/Academic activity -Lake Como boat ride

May 22-Travel to Padua.  University of Padua visit

May 23-Power Plant visit-Location TBD, Padua overnight

May 24- Winery visits, afternoon and evening free time

May 25-Free day in Bologna

May 26- University of Bologna, Visit to Dallara

May 27-Visit to Ferrari & Race Track,  possible Ducati visit

May 28-Visit to Parma (Dairy and Cheese industry)

May 29- Travel to Rome- Visit to La Sapienza (University of Rome)

May 30-Event at Italian Ministry of Education/US Embassy, Rome overnight

May 31-Free day in Rome

June 1- Students free to depart any time

 

 

 


Academic Credit

Earn 3 credits for ME 49700.  All students must check with their academic advisor to see how this course can be used in their plan of study.

Eligibility

This program is open to all engineering students, but preference will be givent to FYE students, especially those interested in GEARE. 

**Minimum GPA is 3.0.  Acceptance decisions will be made in January 2025 after fall 2024 grades are posted.  Deposit will be due after acceptance.

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated cost is $4,800 which includes:  All hotels, breakfast daily, all academic activities, all cultural excursions on the itinerary, Welcome and Farewell meals, 3 academic credits, and international health insurance.

Additional costs:  Airfare, meals, passport and visa (if necessary), personal spending money.
