Explore Japan: From Vibrant Tokyo to Historic Nagasaki!

Educational Maymester in Japan is a 3- or 6-credit hour study abroad program, offered for the first time in May/June 2025. This unique experience will deepen your understanding of Japan’s modern and traditional landscapes, from the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene countryside of Gunma and the historic significance of Nagasaki. Whether you’re interested in Japanese language, history, education or global studies, this program offers interdisciplinary learning, cultural immersion, and the chance to connect with local college students and professionals. Discover the heart of Japan while gaining invaluable global perspectives and building lasting memories!

During the program, participants will be immersed in Tokyo’s dynamic urban culture, exploring the innovative intersection of art, science, nature, and technology. They will engage in service learning by visiting some of Gunma’s genkai shuraku (“marginal hamlets” – a merged town or village in Japan that has experienced depopulation and in danger of disappearing altogether), where they will collaborate with local college students to gain insight into the challenges of rural depopulation and community revitalization. In Nagasaki, participants will have opportunities to visit local schools, fostering cross-cultural exchange with local elementary students. They will also delve into Nagasaki’s unique blend of history, culture and global perspectives while working with local university students, gaining a comprehensive perspective on Japan’s complex past and its role in the global landscape.

Academic Credit

EDPS 49000 Japan: Culture, History & Education (3 or 6 credits)* 

*The course is approved to count for:

-Major & Minor in Japanese and Asian Studies;  and 

-Both of CoS Science Core requirement: General Education and Culture and Diversity.

Also, the course is used for a minor in Global Studies: Program: Global Studies Minor - Purdue University - Modern Campus Catalog™

 

Eligibility

The study abroad program in Japan is open to all Purdue students, regardless of thier academic major, but participants must be at least 18 years old by the start of the program ard in good academic standing.  

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated Cost: about $6,000

Included in the program cost are the following:

  • Course Registration

  • Emergency Medical Insurance

  • Housing Accommodations 

  • Group meals (some breakfast and lunch on the cultural exploration days) 

  • Transportation to/from trips and excursions

  • Study abroad sponsored activities

The following are NOT included in the program cost:

  • Passport/Visa application fees

  • Airfare to/from the host country (usually about $1200-$1500, for economy round trip) 

  • Souvenirs and non-sponsored activities (Activities during free times will be at your own expense) 

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program reaches its maximum capacity of 10 students, with a final deadline of December 31, 2024. Accepted students must submit a $500 deposit to secure their spot by the specified deadline.
