Program Description

This study abroad experience will be embedded in a course that is required for ABE majors. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with students from multiple countries in SSA by traveling to Tanzania over Spring Break to present their research at a poster presentation for the BIRS symposium. They will also have an opportunity to interact and attend other poster presentations from working professionals across SSA and hear about their projects. Students will also have the opportunity to experience local culture and biodiversity through a 3 day safari.

**Please note that this is an embedded class.  Students will be registered for ABE 32700 (or ABE 45300)  for spring 2025 with embedded travel at spring break.  Please contact Prof. Kari Clase with questions on your eligibility.

March 15- Depart for Tanzania  (there won't be a group flight but you must choose certain flights for common arrival times)

March 16-Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, pick-up,  overnight in Arusha hotel

March 17, 18, -  Safari (all-inclusive with hotels and meals) Ngorongoro Crater & Tarangire National Park

      -Wildlife viewing, Mtowa Mbu village, Maasai, Ngoni, Chagga, Iraq

     -Hotel is Karatu Kudu Lodge

March 19-20-Phage genome discovery research activities with Purdue MMM BIRS symposium participants.

March 21-Attend and present at poster presentation for PU MMM BIRS symposium

March 22-Depart from Kilimanjaro Airport

March 23-Arrive in US

Academic Credit

2 credits for ABE 32700 or 2 credits for ABE 45300. Please check with your academic advisor as to how this will fit into your plan of study.

10 students from the ABE 32700 course and peer mentors in ABE 45300

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated cost: $2,200 which includes:  All housing, meals, safari experience, park transportation, academic activities, 2 academic credits, and international health insurance.

Additional expeses: Flight, passport, visa, personal spending money
