Program Description

SUSTAINABLE FUTURES: INNOVATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN MEDELLÍN

This is the John Martinson Honors College Signature Program for Rising Juniors and Seniors, which brings together global learning, cultural immersion, and professional and leadership development, all in one unique study away program!

During this six-week summer experience, students will gain hands-on professional experience each day through placement with a local business or organization in Medellín, while also studying innovation and sustainability with faculty at Universidad EAFIT.

Intercultural activities and Spanish language instruction will enhance the Colombian cultural experience and provide participants the tools to build an international professional network.

Program activities will also include community visits, industry tours, and field trips in the local area.

 


Academic Credit

Students will earn 9 HONR credits through this program by participating in hand-on experiences at Colombian businesses in Medellin and courses offered at EAFIT University.

HONR 22100: Exploring Place (fulfills the Behavorial and Social Sciences requirement of the UCC core)

HONR 29900: Innovation in Colombia

HONR 31500: Across Differences: Colombian Culture (fulfills the Humanities requirement of the UCC core)

In addition to earning HONR credits for the program courses, students will fulfill UCC core requirements. For those who have not yet completed their scholarly project, by participating in this program, students can enroll in HONR 22100 (Exploring Place: Internship) during the Fall 2025 semester to complete that requirement of the JMHC curriculum.

Eligibility

To participate in this program, students must be rising third- or fourth-year students in the John Martinson Honors College in good standing and must have completed 12 or more honors credits by the start of the program.

 

Medellin Travel Guide: Advice from an Expat - Go Backpacking

Spanish-language fluency or proficiency is not a requirement of this program. The program integrates Spanish-language learning at EAFIT as a course activity.

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Estimated program cost:  $1500 inclusive of some meals, logding (apartments), insurance, courses, site visits, ground transportation.

  • Does not include: airfare and some meals.

The estimated cost of this program has been subsidized through generous support from the John Martinson Honors College.

John Martinson Honors College (JMHC) Global Enrichment Award

Students in the JMHC can apply for a Global Enrichment Award of up to $1,500 to use toward the program cost. Please contact Catharine Patrone (cpatrone@purdue.edu) with questions.

 

Global Leaps Scholarship

Participants who are US citizens or permanent residents are strongly encouraged to apply for the Global Leaps Scholarship through the MyStudyAbroad system. Global Leaps awards are based on total family income and require having a FAFSA on file. For this summer program, participants are eligible for the following amounts of scholarship funding, which can be applied to the program fee billed by Purdue but also expenses like airfare.

- Total family income of $75,000 or less: $2500 applied to the program cost
- Total family income of $75,001 to $100,000: $2000 applied to the program cost
- Total family income of $100,001 to $125,000: $1500 applied to the program cost
- Total family income of $125,001 to $150,000: $1000 applied to the program cost
- Total family income of $150,001 or greater: Ineligible

Experiential Education Scholarship

The Office of Experiential Education has financial support available for students participating in experiential education opportunities. Funds can be used for educational expenses incurred while participating in experiential education. Student must be participating in an experiential education opportunity offered by Purdue University. All funds will be applied through the Financial Aid system. See here for more information and application link:

Eligibility

  • Must be a Purdue West Lafayette or Indianapolis undergraduate or PharmD degree-seeking student
  • In good academic standing
  • Enrolled full-time or part-time for Purdue courses for the term in which the scholarship is received
  • Meet financial aid citizenship requirements

Application Deadline

Priority given to students who apply before December 1, 2025. 

Students will receive an email from Dr. Natasha Duncan within 2 weeks of application on MyStudy Abroad to schedule a short interview required as part of the application process.
