Program Description

Kenya is a low and middle income country (LMIC) with a lot of challenges in the health sector, ranging from a high prevalence of diseases and disease conditions, high economic burdens associated with healthcare, and infrastructural challenges to human behavior (social determinants) that affect treatment and management of different disease conditions. These challenges provide an opportunity for learning about health and development in LMICs through practical engagements with the communities affected by these challenges. Through visits to Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, students will engage with communities and be enlightened on how scientific innovations have improved and adapted to different health conditions in Kenya and how the socio-cultural dynamics influence health outcomes in different environments. Students will also learn how socio-cultural dynamics drive poor health, health seeking behavior, or the development of health threatening conditions such as antimicrobial resistance.

Students will work with Dr. Eddy Odari, an adjunct associate professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering, who has vast experience working with the communities and health-education and service providers in Western Kenya. Dr. Odari is a native of Kenya, with a faculty position at the College of Health Sciences, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Through his 5 years of engagement with Purdue University, previously as a visiting scholar, Dr. Odari has helped establish demonstration sites for various groups of students (such as engineering for global health) in Western Kenya, where students go to evaluate and improve their innovations such as water distillators in rural health facilities.

Pre-Departure Expectations

Students accepted to the program will be expected to participate in pre-departure meetings during the first two weeks of March 2025, when Dr. Odari will be visiting Purdue. This is an opportunity for students in the program to become acquainted and begin interacting. It also affords students an opportunity to meet and get to know Dr. Odari before the program begins in Kenya.
