Program Description

Students are invited to apply to a Maymester study abroad program in Tokyo, Japan. Human-Centered Design for Multicultural Families of Disabled Children in Tokyo, Japan

Course number SA 10923

Students will learn about the history of industrialization in Japan, the cultural attitudes toward technology as informed by Buddhism, Shinto beliefs, and historic social rituals and hierarchies. They will also learn about current policies in technology advancement. These lessons will be supported by tours of historic sites, museums visits, and other cultural experiences.

Students will be expected to conduct qualitative research collaboratively and work together to ensure that data collection protocols are culturally relevant and thus supportive of valid data and interpretation.

Students will learn about how public policy impacts disabled daily life and technology access, through comparing and contrasting the public policies of Japan and the United States. Students will find that both systems have advantages and disadvantages, and that no system fully supports disabled people and their technology rights.

Students will be introduced to disabled children and their families and explore novel technology design that supports children in pursuing something that brings them joy.

Eligibility

All students are eligible reguardless of major or language proficiency.

Students will write a statement of interest in case of overenrollment.

Students who do not already have a passport may not recieve one in time to travel.

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
