Program Description

Join us for an unforgettable study abroad experience in London, where science meets sustainability and innovation. 

The program begins with a captivating double-decker bus tour of London, allowing you to see the city's iconic sights from a unique perspective. You’ll also enjoy a traditional high tea, immersing yourself in a quintessential aspect of British culture. Following this, experience a relaxing River Thames cruise that offers stunning views of famous landmarks.

As you delve deeper into the theme of sustainability, you’ll embark on a sustainable architecture walking tour, discovering innovative and eco-friendly designs throughout the city. This theme continues with visits to companies focusing on future trends and innovations in agricultural technology, as well as a tour of the Bywaters Recycling Facility, where you will gain insights into recycling processes and sustainability initiatives in London. Additional company visits will also be included, showcasing various focus areas within science and technology.

Your journey will include a visit to the Science Museum, where interactive exhibits showcase the latest advancements in science and technology. You will also explore the Imperial War Museum, gaining insights into the historical impact of war on technology and society.

Later in the program, you’ll visit Bletchley Park and the Museum of Computing, where you can explore the birthplace of modern computing and uncover the fascinating history of codebreaking during World War II. Additionally, you will engage in a walking tour of Silicon Roundabout, London’s tech hub, where you’ll learn about its impact on innovation in the tech industry.

To further enrich your cultural experience, you’ll enjoy a captivating performance at the Globe Theatre, featuring a classic Shakespearean play. You’ll also witness the Changing of the Guard and take a guided tour of Westminster Abbey, exploring its architectural beauty and historical significance.

A day trip to Oxford rounds out the itinerary, where you will engage with a research team at the prestigious Oxford University and visit Begbroke Science Park. 

On another day, you will have the opportunity to explore Camden Market, known for its eclectic food, shopping, and vibrant culture. Throughout your stay, you’ll also have the chance to discover London’s diverse cuisine and dining options, whether at local restaurants or street food markets. 

Finally, you’ll have a weekend free to explore London at your leisure or take an exciting trip outside the city.

Academic Credit

Students will receive two (2) credit for a course listed as Science (SCI 19500) elective.

Eligibility

All students in good standing with the University are welcome to apply. As part of the application process, students must write a short prompt why they want to participate in this experience. This will help staff assess student interest in this program. 

All students participating in a departmental program will complete a pre and post assessment as part of program completion.

Program Cost

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.

Flights excluded.

Breakfast, welcome dinner and farewell dinner are included, all other meals are excluded.
