Overview
Immerse yourself in Ghanaian life by enrolling in courses with local and international students at CIEE’s partner school, University of Ghana – ranked 7th best university in Africa. Students can take a full course load at University of Ghana or combine courses with CIEE electives, including options for internships. All courses are complemented with CIEE co-curricular activities and excursions beyond the city to enhance classroom learning and provide intercultural understanding.
CIEE Ghana is designed for students interested in the political and economic challenges of sub-Saharan Africa as well as West African cultural practices. It offers opportunities for students interested in public health, development, African history and culture to contribute to the intellectual, cultural, economic and social life of Ghana.
The CIEE study center is located in Legon, approximately ten miles outside Accra, which is the capital of Ghana. Because of their close proximity to Accra, participants have access to the advantages of a large urban metropolis while living in a relatively underdeveloped environment. The residents of Ghana are noticeably friendly, which allows students to learn about the complexities of the nations on the African continent.

Eligibility
The program is open to Purdue students who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity and a desire to experience another culture.
Previous college-level coursework in African studies recommended.

Academic Program
Students earn 15-18 credits through coursework at the CIEE center and The University of Ghana. The university follows a British model, which is less structured and requires students to take more responsibility and initiative. Professors expect students to spend significant time studying outside of class. Attendance is mandatory, and there are mandatory tutorials by Teaching Assistants.

Excursions
The program includes various cultural activities and excursions. Listed below are examples of previous activities, which are subject to change.
- Travel to Cape Coast and Elmina to see slave castles and the starting point of the transatlantic journey.
- Visit the Ashanti region to explore the traditional chieftaincy institution, history, and culture as well as the role women play in the making and unmaking of chiefs among the Ashanti people.
- Experience regional highlights like Aburi Botanical Gardens, Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, Boti Falls, Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Lake Volta, Tafi-Atome monkey sanctuary, and the W.E.B. Dubois Center.
- Get involved on campus by joining a music, theater, or art group, or meeting up with Ghanaian students for soccer, running, swimming, field hockey, or tennis. Basketball and baseball are also getting popular.
- Take advantage of campus lectures, discussions, and receptions.
Housing
CIEE students have two housing options: homestay with a Ghanaian family or a room in an on-campus dormitory.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program. The Program and Housing Fees include: Tuition, on-site orientation, housing, and excursions. Depending on the housing choice, some meals might be included.
