Program Description

The program will explore medical history and put context to what is read and studied in our Healthcare Past and Present and Wartime Influences in Healthcare courses. In these courses, we read, discuss, and explore pertinent events in the advancement of medical history and wartime medicine. Many of the events discussed take place in United Kingdom. Some of the key historical figures and events that are discussed are Florence Nightingale, germ theory of disease, Joseph Lister, innovations in healthcare during WWI, the origin of pediatric nursing, and much more. The program will offer the students to see first hand where events took place and experience numerous historic sites and museums dedicated to these medical advancements. The program will fulfill an elective for any major or minor. Nursing students have a direct benefit in this program due to the difficult nature for study abroad with their major and the relatively low cost for the trip.
