Program Description
Join Prof. Carl Wassgren in beautiful Heidelberg, Germany to complete ME 20000 Thermodynamics I. This is the same on-campus course taught by a Purdue Professor. A Purdue TA joins the group to assist.
Students will stay at the StayCity Aparthotel in Heidelberg and walk to class at Schiller University (classroom space only). Classes will be held on week days with weekends free for travel and exploration.
*Minimum GPA is 3.0 and all particpants must have completed PHYS 17200 prior to departure.
Tentative Schedule: Cultural events like Schonbuch Brewery, Heidelberg Castle tour, Mercedes Benz, guest lecture on German political and Social Systems, and others TBD will be scheduled during the evenings and non-class hours.
May 9- Students depart the USA
May 10-Arrive in Germany, check into housing, day to rest.
May 11-Orientation, practical walking tour, transportation passes distributed, Welcome Lunch, 2:00-5:00 first class, free evening
May 12- 9:00-12:00 class, lunch break, 1:00-3:00 Problem solving session, Guided walking tour of historic Heidelberg
May 13- 9:00-12:00 class, lunch break, 1:00-3:00 problem solving session, Meet & Greet with German and American exchange students to discuss German university life and life as an American living in Germany.
May 14- 9:00-12:00 class, lunch break, 1:00-3:00 problem solving session, free time
May 15-17-Free days (Monday May 17 is a national holiday)
May 18-21 -9:00-12:00 Class, lunch break, 1:00-3:00 problem solving sessions, free evenings

Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for ME 20000 Thermodynamics I

Eligibility
Open to all Engineering students with this class as part of their plan of study. 3.0 minimum GPA to be considered. Prerequisite PHYS 17200 to be completed prior to departure.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated cost: $5,900-$6200. This cost includes: All housing, three academic credits, all activities and cultural excursions on the itinerary, transportation pass, breakfast daily, welcome and farewell meals, international health insurance.
Additional costs: Round-trip airfare, passport, meals, personal activities/travel, and personal spending money.

Application Deadline
Students will be accepted on a rolling basis until the program is full. 22 spots available. FYE students with no established GPA will not receive an acceptance decision until after fall 2026 grades are posted.
