The 2027 Spring Break Study Abroad on Safe and Sustainable Data Centers in Italy is in collaboration with the University of Insubria in Varese. Varese is about 35 km north of Milan and is known as the "Garden City" in Lombardy, northern Italy. Varese is near Lake Como and the Alpine passes to Switzerland with the nearest Swiss border about 11 km away.
Sightseeing activities planned include a guided tour of the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) and the Castello Sforzesco (Sforsa Castle) in central Milan, Sacro Monte di Varese, a UNESCO World Heritage site at the foothills of the Alps and Villa Toeplitz in Varese. We plan to visit several museums including Leonardo da VInce National Museum of Sciene and Technology, the Museum of Electrical Technology in Pavia, in honor of Alessandro Volta, the man who invented the electric battery and the Volta Museum in Como on the shores of beautiful Lake Como. We will also have two plant tours of data centers and one tour of an industrial manufacturer near Milan.
Students will book their own flights either to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) or to Zurich Airport (ZRH) and take a train to Varese. One can book a flight from our Purdue University Airport (LAF) to Chicago connecting to one of two non-stop flights to Zurich, Switzerland.
