Program Description
Join Prof. Michael Titus in Madrid in May 2027! This is the same class taught on the Purdue campus and is taught by a Purdue professor.
MSE 23000 is the introductory materials science and engineering course that is required for MSE and ME students. The course explores the relationship between the structure of materials and the resulting mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. Additionally, concepts of atomic structure, bonding, atomic arrangement; crystal structure, crystal symmetry, defects, and the use of X-ray diffraction will be introduced. Introduction to phase equilibria and microstructural development will be made. Finally, brief examples of applications to design will be provided. Madrid's strong aerospace industry makes Madrid an excellent location for this topic.

*Students will be housed in shared apartments in Madrid. Typically, 4-6 students per apartment (2 per bedroom). These apartments have fully equipped kitchens for meals and only Purdue students in apartments.
Academic Credit
Earn 3 credits for MSE 23000 Structure and Properties of Materials
Eligibility
This course is open to students in MSE, ME, and related majors. No students on Academic Notice will be considered.
All students must check with their academic advisor to see how this course can be used in your plan of study.
Program Cost
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss.
Estimated Program cost is: $5,800-$6,100. Cost includes: (3) Academic credits, housing, transportation pass for Madrid, all class and cultural activities on the itinerary (city tour, winery visit, Spanish cooking class, guest lecture on history of Spain, Welcome and Farewell meals, and international health insurance.
Additional costs: RT Airfare, travel documents, meals (apartments have fully equipped kitchens), personal activities and personal spending money.
