Overview

Tec de Monterrey-Queretaro

On campus

Of all the countries in Latin America, Mexico welcomes the most number of international exchange students in study abroad programs every year. The Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, commonly known as Tec de Monterrey, or "Tec," was founded in 1943 by a group of entrepreneurs headed by Don Eugenio Garza Sada. Seeking to educate professionals and equip them with the skills needed to succeed in the business world, Tec de Monterrey has developed into an institution recognized, nationally and internationally, for its academic excellence.

A private non-profit nationwide university system, Tec de Monterrey is comprised of 29 campuses spread throughout 26 Mexican cities. The international study abroad program is only available at select campuses, including Queretaro.

Although Querétaro is one of the smaller states, its capital offers a surprising range of activities, from the golf and riding clubs on its outskirts to Fray Junípero's mission in the Sierra Gorda; from relaxing spas to mountaineering excursions, from the San Joaquín forest to La Huasteca in Jalpan, which can take anything from a few hours to a few days.

The city was founded in 1531 as an indigenous town as a result of an alliance between Hernán Bocanegra and the Otomí chief Conin, baptized as Fernando de Tapia, who helped combat the Chichimecs that lived in the region, although the rebellions continued until 1590. During the following centuries, the state became the third largest in the kingdom, while its elite played a key role in the Mexican Independence. In 1847, it became the capital of the region and twenty years later, it was the site of the decisive battle between the forces of the Republic and the empire of Maximilian. In 1917, Mexico's current Constitution was drafted and signed in Querétaro.

The work of all these centuries is reflected in Querétaro's numerous churches, monasteries and other historic buildings. One of the cleanest and safest cities in Latin America, Queretaro's charm invites you admire restored old buildings and impeccable squares. A downtown highlighted by colonial splendor, UNESCO named it to the World Heritage List in 1996 and notes it is an exceptional example of a colonial town whose layout symbolizes its multi-ethnic population.

Academic Program

Students can choose from a variety of academic coursework, offered in both English and Spanish. Students with limited Spanish should note that not all courses are offered in English, though a good number are.

Tec operates on the "Tec 21" system, which allows students to mix and match classes to make their own study plan. The system divides the semester into three sections, with a "Tec Week" in between. Classes may be intensive and last just one section of the semester, or be more like a regular Purdue class that runs for the entire semester. During Tec Weeks, there are optional educational activities and projects, or students may use these weeks as a break.

Students with sufficient Spanish proficiency (usually the equivalent of four semesters of college-level Spanish) may choose from the regular courses offered by Tec. Courses are offered in Agriculture, Engineering, Management and Business, Food Technology, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Computers, and Social Sciences.

Students should note the academic calendar at Tec, the spring semester runs from February to June, and the fall from August to December. Course offerings for each semester at Tec are released later than Purdue's course catalog so students should plan back-up courses and understand that it will take longer to finalize their class schedule.

In addition to academic courses, a limited number of unpaid internships are available. The International Programs Office at the Tec assists students in locating internship placements.

Excursions

The international office at Tec arranges many activities for students to participate in starting with a full orientation program. Other activities throughout the semester may include a day trip to a nearby town, a visit to the university's farm, cooking classes, dancing, and other cultural activities. These may vary, but are always a great way to learn more about the culture and make friends!

Housing

This program offers an on-campus residence hall, host family, or students may choose to find their own housing off-campus.

Host families are generally very supportive and help the students learn the language and the culture of Mexico. Tec-Queretaro screens the families carefully before assigning students. The families also go through a cross-cultural training process before housing international students. Housing payment includes 3 meals a day, laundry, room cleaning, and an individual room (in the summer, the rooms can be shared).

Students who do not want to stay with a family can opt to stay in the Tec residence hall or rent a private room or apartment.

The Tec-Queretaro residence halls are inside campus. They have double rooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom. There are large shared kitchens on each floor, and students may choose to live on a co-ed floor or a single-gender floor. The residences also have a 24-hour closed circuit security system, air conditioning, laundry, recreation areas and resident assistance. Staying in the Residence Halls will be both pleasant and safe. Students choosing this option should apply directly to the Residence Hall coordinator.

Students can also rent a private room off-campus or share an apartment with other Tec or Purdue students studying in Queretaro.
