You will be able to study at one of the most prestigious universities in Latin America, and will spend a long weekend living in an intentional community hours from  Havana. Learn, explore, dance, play ball, and make friends while you are part of something few Americans will ever experience.

Study at Universidad de La Habana - the largest and oldest university in Cuba, which attracts students from throughout Latin America and around the world. Located next to the heart of Havana's historic district, UH offers a unique opportunity for the adventurous and flexible student. You'll take integrated classes with Cuban students in a variety of disciplines.

The fall semester runs from late August to mid-December. The spring semester runs from mid-February to early June.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
Language Requirement: 5 Sem Spanish

Academic Program

IFSA offers a dynamic, immersive study abroad program that allows you to enroll directly at Universidad de La Habana and take four to five electives from the Facultad de Arts y Letras and Facultad de Filosofia e Historia. Students can take a maximum of 16 credits hours.

IFSA programs always include an extensive on-site orientation and lots of excursions and cultural events and activities. A long weekend living in an intentional community a few hours from Havana is included, as well as additional cultural activities.


Students are placed in Casa Paticulares, which are private accommodations with a Cuban family. The concept of a casa particular is similar to a bed and breakfast or room rental. This is common in Cuba, in which private family establishments provide paid lodging, usually on a short-term basis. Rooms are shared doubles with air conditioning, shared bathroom and access to a refrigerator and safety box. All linens are provided. Housing is within walking distance from the university. The housing includes three meals per day. Students may purchase an affordable lunch near the university, or prepare a lunch to take from home.

Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

The Program Fee Includes tuition, on-site orientation, academic advising services, and excursions and cultural activities. The housing fee includes homestay housing with all linens, laundry and two meals a day.

For full consideration, students must submit all supporting documents (typically an essay, transcripts, 1-2 recommendations, and copy of passport) before or by the application deadline.  Popular programs fill quickly, often before the deadline. To ensure a place in a program, apply early.
