Overview
Since its founding in 1974, the Nanzan Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) has been a leader in Japanese language studies, with the goal of helping each student develop a better understanding of the Japanese people and language. By living and learning in Japan, students experience the “real Japan” together with a wide cross-section of people from other countries and cultures. The result is a dynamic group of students from many different backgrounds united in their goal to discover Japan.
Nanzan University is a private university of 5,000 students with a modern campus situated in the rolling hills overlooking the metropolitan city of Nagoya.
Founded in 1946 as a college of foreign languages, Nanzan University has grown into one of the most prestigious universities in the Tokai region. Nagoya is the fourth largest city in Japan, with well over 8 million people. It is a port and commercial center that was extensively rebuilt after heavy bomb damage during World War II. Today Nagoya is a booming modern city that still houses some memorials of its ancient past including one of Japan's most famous and ancient Shinto shrines. Tokyo is two hours away by express train and to Kyoto it is less than one hour.

Eligibility
Center for Japanese Studies at Nanzan
Japanese majors/minors who are Indiana residents will receive preference. Students are eligible if they:
- have attained a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0;
- have reached at least sophomore standing by the start of the program;
- have completed at least two semesters of college level Japanese.
Proficiency in Japanese is not required for admission to the program, but students will be required to enroll in intensive Japanese classes which make up the major part of the Nanzan curriculum. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
Students complete 14-18 credit hours each semester. Students will participate in the Intensive Japanese Program (IJP). Nanzan University's calendar is similar to most US universities: September - December (fall) and January - May (spring).
CJS believes that communication is the key to understanding any culture, and so the Japanese courses at Nanzan stress the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Intensive courses are offered in elementary, intermediate and advanced Japanese. The lecture courses are typically taught in English and the subject matter is often placed within a wider Asian context. More advanced students can take a series of seminars conducted in Japanese. Topics might include readings in the social sciences, Japanese literature, translation and classical Japanese.
Excursions
The academic program is complemented by group excursions designed to enhance knowledge from the classroom. Trips may include visits to a traditional village, a local industry such as the Toyota Motor Corporation, a Buddhist monastery, and other locations.
Housing
Students can choose to live with a Japanese family in Nagoya, to find their own apartment, or to stay in a privately managed dormitory in the area. Nanzan encourages students to choose a housing option that facilitates daily contact with Japanese people.
