General Course Description:

Globalization has made intercultural teamwork an essential part of the diverse workplace. In this study abroad program, students are first prepared for travel through a series of pre-departure meetings where we introduce Chinese language, culture, discuss required readings, cover travel procedures including flights and visas, and get to know one another. Then, for 2 weeks, students are immersed in Chinese culture and experience numerous culturally significant sites, visit local universities, meet with Purdue alumni, tour engineering based labs and production facilities, and meet one on one with Chinese peers in partner universities. Additionally, expert tour guides are utilized in Shanghai and Beijing as resources which help the students gain insights into the local culture as well as details on the locations visited. Students will study and discuss the cultural dimensions as described by Hofstede in daily small group meetings, write about their experiences in location based logs, and work in groups to complete a final project within a week of returning to the U.S.

Academic Details of the Program:
Objective 1 – Expose students to cultural background material, visitation site background, and intercultural communications through course readings and reflective responses.
Objective 2 – Introduce students to Chinese culture through immersion while providing ways for students to identify cultural patterns.
Objective 3 – Reflect on intercultural experiences while in China through location based logs, reflections within the context of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, and daily small-group discussions.
Objective 4 - Students complete a group project which will focus on aspects of Chinese cultural and social life.
