Overview

IES-Christchurch: University of Canterbury

The IES Christchurch program offers direct enrollment at the University of Canterbury, an institution of 12,500 students.

Christchurch is one of the oldest and most European cities in New Zealand. Located in the heart of the spectacular beauty of the South Island, Christchurch, known as the Garden City, is ideally situated to explore the rugged Southern Alps, the fjords, and the miles of endless coastline.

IES Christchurch sponsors field trips that give students a unique opportunity to enrich their classroom learning.

The University of Canterbury and IES also offer optional field trips to other parts of New Zealand (such as the Southern Alps and Wellington) at a reasonable cost, and routinely hosts cultural events and guest lectures for the general student body and for individual courses.

For more program information, please visit the program website. This program is sponsored by:IES.

Academic Program

The University of Canterbury (UC) has hundreds of course offerings. In addition to course offerings across the disciplines, the University offers you unique opportunities for course-related trips through its four research stations.

For more information and to explore the course catalog click here.

This program also has service-learning opportunities available.

Even though you are directly enrolling in courses at UC, you will receive support, registration assistance and advising through IES as well.

Excursions

Due to COVID-19, excursions are subject to change.

Even though your adventure starts in Christchurch, our mid-semester field trip to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands takes you beyond the city to discover the culture and traditions of this small island nation in the Pacific. (This trip is partially subsidized by IES Abroad. You are responsible for a portion of the cost.)

The University of Canterbury has established four field research stations throughout the South Island. These field stations are in the Southern Alps, on both the east and west coasts, and in different climatic regions. If you choose to study certain Biology, Forestry, Geography, or Geology courses, you may have the opportunity to do research at one of the field stations as part of your course.

Housing

As part of IES Abroad’s direct enrollment services, they offer well-located, comfortable housing for all students because securing housing independently can be challenging. IES Abroad’s housing options reflect the local student culture and meet our safety and security standards.

Ilam Apartments – Located across from the University of Canterbury campus, the Ilam Apartments are home to more international students than Kiwis. You have your own bedroom in a four- to six-person suite. The apartments are fully furnished with kitchens, communal living areas, and free Internet connections. Limited meal plans can be purchased onsite after arrival, but are not included in the program fee.
