Founded in 1872, the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna, known by its acronym "BOKU", now comprises 14 departments and four service centres in Vienna, as well as a number of experimental centres around Vienna. The principal university buildings are located in two areas:  in Türkenschanz Park and in Muthgasse. At the Türkenschanz location are the departments which provide teaching and research in the agricultural sciences, forestry, wood technology, landscape architecture and conservation.  The departments concerned with food science, biotechnology, land & water management and civil engineering are based at Muthgasse. The university has approximately 12,000 students, provides courses at the bachelor, masters and doctoral levels.

Students can select from a wide range of courses in botany, forestry, food science, landscape architecture, economics, wildlife, environmental, and animal science.  The courses are organised around the main teaching and research disciplines of BOKU — sustainable use of naturally growing raw materials both for energy supply as well as for innovative materials, protecting regenerable sources such as water, soil and atmosphere, shaping true to life production and health, protecting and shaping biotopes and environments, protecting the wellbeing of plants, animals and humans. Courses are taught in English.
