Overview

This program combines a semester of exchange at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with a 3 month internship in industry or at a university research facility. Students travel to Germany in January for the internship opportunity and work full-time prior to beginning their studies at KIT in April.

During the semester of study at KIT, Purdue students are paired with KIT students for a global design team project. These projects continue the following spring when the KIT GEARE students study at Purdue.


Eligibility

This program is available to Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering students participating in the GEARE program.Applicants should be in good standing and have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

GPA Requirement: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

Academic Program

Language of Instruction: English and German

Semester Course Load: 30 ECTS (15 Purdue credit hours) + 3month internship



Housing

During the academic semester, KIT helps students arrange for a single room in shared student housing facility within the city of Karlsruhe.

Students interning outside of Karlsruhe work with their employers to arrange for short-term housing.

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

Along with the costs outlined below, students participating on exchange programs in Germany should expect to pay a semester contribution toward subsidized services at their host university.  These fees range from approximately €75 to €350 per semester and typically include a pass for regional public transportation.  See your study abroad advisor for more details.
