Overview
Arles, a charming Provençal town, is famous for its beautiful architecture including its Roman theater and arena, its 2000 year history, and its association with van Gogh, Gaugin, Cézanne, and Picasso. Many dance, music, photography, theater, and folklore festivals take place in and around Arles throughout the summer, making it a vibrant location for study abroad in France.
This advanced program offers students a menu of interdisciplinary courses taught in French in French Language, Cultural/Francophone Studies, Photography and Theater.
Immerse yourself in French language practice and the rich cultures of Provence. Highlights of this program are the language-intensive lunches that take place at local restaurants, where you practice your French with IES Abroad professors and staff. Fridays are reserved for course-related activities and trips: concerts at the Roman theater, trips to Aix-en-Provence or Le Pont du Gard, museum visits, and more.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
Create your own academic experience by enrolling in two French-taught courses. Courses are taught at the IES Abroad Center by local faculty.

Excursions
Day-trip destinations may include Le Pont du Gard and les Baux de Provence, Avignon, and Aix-en-Provence.
Housing
The IES Arles program offers homestays with local French families, which offer a realistic view of southern French life. Although homestays will vary, southern homes are often smaller and equipped with older amenities than other more modern French and American cities. You will rarely find air conditioning in homes or public buildings. Host families provide ten meals per week.
In order to immerse students in the local culture and further their linguistic development, IES provides three lunches every week at several different local restaurants. All students are required to attend. These meals offer the opportunity for you to practice your French in the presence of IES professors and to sample the local cuisine.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
The program fee includes: Tuition (6 credits), which includes 3 required lunches per week at local restaurants, housing with a host family, which includes 10 meals per week, multiple excursions throughout Provence and course-related field study, and on-site orientation.
