Leibniz University Hannover- Summer Science and Engineering Projects

Before applying, students interested in this program should discuss their plans with the Study Abroad Liaison in the College of Engineering or the College of Science depending on their major area of study.

After their Purdue Study Abroad applications are approved, participants also need to apply directly to Leibniz University Hannover by February 1.  Try to complete your Purdue application early - the sooner, the better!

The Leibniz University Hannover- Summer Science and Engineering Projects program allows Purdue engineering and science majors to carry out research internships under the direction of local faculty members.  Leibniz University Hannover is a member of the TU9, an association of the leading technical universities in Germany.

No knowledge of German is required for participation, as the program is conducted entirely in English.  However, for those looking to develop their language skills, Hannover's dialect is considered especially learner-friendly.  Hannover is the capital of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) and the political and cultural center of the region.  Known as a "Green City" and "City of Short Distances," Hannover a great home base for students to explore near and far in their free time.

Eligibility

Applicants need to be at least juniors majoring in science or engineering at the time of application.

Interested students should discuss their research plans with the Study Abroad Liaison for their home school or department before confirming participation in this program. 

 Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program

Language of Instruction: English

Summer Course Load: 6

Engineering- Six credits may count toward technical electives.

Science- College of Science students should correspond with the appropriate Study Abroad Liaison and their academic advisor to discuss course credit.

Students work full-time (36-40 hours per week) in a university research facility under the supervision of a Leibniz University Hannover faculty member.  Students produce biweekly reports regarding their research topic and cultural experiences. They complete a technical report near the end of their experience.

Excursions

Organized professional, cultural, and social experiences on this program include an orientation week, field trips, company visits, and group activities.  In previous terms, visits to the Hannover Messe and major corporations in the vicinity such as Volkswagen, MTU Maintenance, and Sennheiser have been featured.

Leibniz University Hannover matches program participants with local "Study Buddies" who will meet them on arrival, help them settle in, and answer questions that arise during their stay.


Housing

Participants are housed in single rooms in university residence halls.  Meals can be prepared in the residence kitchens, taken at the student cafeteria (Mensa) or in nearby restaurants.


Estimated Program Costs

Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. 

Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location.  This will vary by program.

In addition to paying for 6 credits of Purdue tuition, students are responsible for the associated program fee to Leibniz University-Hannover.

The program fee covers housing, insurance, local transportation, excursions and organized social events.  A  deposit will be due at the program office in Germany within two weeks of acceptance.  The deposit will be credited towards the program fee and is non-refundable.

Note that the program fee listed below is based on the exchange rate at the time of update and should act only as an estimate.  

The visa fee listed below is only necessary for Purdue international students who are citizens of countries required to get entry visas for Germany.  Your study abroad advisor can provide more information about this.
