The streets of Toledo

This program is offered in collaboration with the prestigious José Ortega y Gasset Foundation and the University of Minnesota.  Three one-day excursions are included in the program fee. Visits are made to such sites as Madrid, Aranjuez, Cuenca, the grand El Escorial, Segovia, and the Route of Don Quixote. All trips are led by faculty who specialize in the respective areas.

Toledo, Spain, is about one hour south of Madrid and is home to about 50,000 people. For more than 2,000 years it has housed a succession of Roman, Jewish, Visigoth, Moorish, and Christian civilizations. Declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, Toledo is a living museum, a preserved part of Spanish history where people still live, work, and play.

Excursions

Due to COVID-19, excursions are subject to change.

Three one-day excursions are included in the program fee.  These are organized to provide participants with cultural and historic perspectives of Spain. Visits are made to such sites as Madrid, Aranjuez, Cuenca, the grand El Escorial, Segovia, and the Route of Don Quixote.

Housing

Students have the option of choosing to live with a host family or living in the residencia.  Meals are included in the program fee and are taken at the residence or with the host family.

Those choosing the residencia will stay at the San Juan de la Penitencia Residence, a renovated 16th Century convent located in the heart of Toledo. The residence includes dining, classroom, library, recreational and housing facilities. Single, double, and triple rooms with shared bathrooms are available, and residence occupants are almost entirely program participants.  A Spanish-only language policy is in place at the residencia.

For an additional fee, participants may also live with a Spanish family. In addition to the privilege of having your own room and enjoying traditional cuisine, living with a host family gives students the opportunity to be immersed in the language, become more intimately acquainted with Spanish life life and culture, and make new friends with one's host family and neighbors.
