Overview
Amman Jordan city view
Put your learning of Arabic on fast-forward in the heart of Amman’s traditional Eastern district. In a city where spectacular Roman ruins share the landscape with Westernized districts dotted with cafes and galleries, students will build on coursework by conversing in homes, workplaces, and among new friends, increasing your understanding of Jordanian society day by day. From the maze-like downtown to the many exotic souks, minarets, mosques, and coffeehouses, students will get a complete Middle Eastern experience in this unforgettable summer.
Despite its famous ruins, the capital of Jordan has plenty of cosmopolitan character. One minute you’re atop the highest of Amman’s seven foremost hills, where the ancient Citadel gives spectacular views all around – and a fascinating look back to Bronze Age. Later the same day, you’re window shopping on trendy Rainbow Street after a tasty meal at a restaurant with sidewalk tables. Wherever you are, you’ll see why Amman has a well-earned reputation for hospitality.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Students interested in completing courses while abroad from Purdue colleges or departments that are not listed above should discuss this with their study abroad advisor before applying to the program.
Academic Program
This eight-week summer program allows students to advance their Arabic language skills while immersing themselves in Jordanian culture. All students are required to take both Modern Standard Arabic and Colloquial Jordanian Arabic, following an on-site placement exam during orientation. Language courses are taught by experienced CIEE Amman language instructors.
Excursions
In-class work is augmented with co-curricular visits to the city’s rich variety of cultural institutions and organizations relevant to the course offerings as well as other activities and excursions.
Potential excursions and activities may include:
- Deepening your understanding of Jordanian culture with visits to museums, archeological treasures, and cultural sites.
- Exploring beyond the city with a one-day trip to noted historical sites, such as Madaba, famous for its Byzantine-era churches.
- Traveling overnight to Petra — an ancient city elaborately carved from the stony cliffs —and Wadi Rum, where ancient inscriptions are tucked among spectacular arid arches, cliffs, caverns, and gorges.
Housing
Participants live with other CIEE students in local apartments or with a host family. Students living with a host family eat two meals per day and most meals on weekends with their host families.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
The program fee includes tuition, orientation, excursions, and on-site orientation.
The housing fee includes self-catered accommodations in an apartment *or* placement with host family, which will include most meals.
