Overview
Mexico is a traveler's paradise, crammed with a multitude of opposing identities: desert landscapes, snow-capped volcanoes, ancient ruins, teeming industrialized cities, time-warped colonial towns, glitzy resorts, lonely beaches and a world-beating collection of flora and fauna. Up along the northern border, Mexico's tumult of heritages merge with the air-conditioned cultures of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
Mexico's profusion of people and landscapes reflects the country's extraordinary history - part Amerindian, part Spanish. One look at this country is enough to remind visitors that there is nothing new about the so-called New World. Despite the considerable colonial legacy and rampant modernization, almost 60 distinct indigenous peoples survive, largely thanks to their rural isolation. This mix of modern and traditional, the clichéd and the surreal, is the key to Mexico's immense popularity as a travel destination.
Purdue University offers a student exchange program with the Instituto Technológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Tec), one of the leading universities in Mexico. 'The Tec' as it is called in Mexico, is particularly strong in agriculture, engineering, management, science, and liberal arts (especially Spanish and international relations). The main Tec campus is in the city of Monterrey.
The city of Monterrey was founded in the 16th Century on a narrow plain between the Santa Catarina River and the foothills of the Eastern Sierra Madre range. Today, Monterrey is the leading industrial center in the country and a major financial center. With many rich traditions from its frontier past, Monterrey blends Mexican heritage and international influences. NAFTA has positioned Monterrey as a vital financial, cultural and industrial bridge between Mexico and the international community.
The Monterrey campus reflects the dynamism and rapid growth characteristics of the city where the University got its start. Classroom buildings and residence halls from the fifties stand alongside the bold, contemporary architecture of state-of-the-art laboratories and research centers. Set on 125 landscaped acres, the campus is an island of calm in the fast-paced city that lies just beyond its gates. Students can satisfy all their everyday needs within walking distance.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.
Students with the equivalent of 4 semesters of Spanish will most likely be able to choose from all the regular University courses offered at Tec (depending on the results of a Spanish placement exam given upon arrival in Monterrey).

Academic Program
Students can choose from regular university courses taught in Spanish or English, as well as classes designed for international students including Spanish as a second language, Mexican Culture, or Doing Business in Mexico.
Students with sufficient Spanish proficiency (usually the equivalent of four semesters of college-level Spanish) may choose from the regular courses offered by Tec. Courses are offered in Agriculture, Management and Business, Food Technology, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Computers, and Social Sciences. For more information on what types of courses are available, please click here.
In addition to academic courses, unpaid internships are available for students enrolled at the Monterrey campus. The International Programs Office at the Tec assists students in locating internship placements.

Housing
Most exchange students choose to live in the Tec's comfortable, well protected residence halls. Staying on campus gives students the chance to live with other Mexican and Latin American students while enjoying the security of residence hall life. Students are normally housed two to a room in single-sex halls. Strict visitation rules are enforced, and members of the opposite sex are not permitted in the men's and women's halls. There are communal bathrooms on each floor and laundry facilities are available.
Currently there is no meal plan provided in Monterrey. Students eat their meals at the various student cafeterias on campus, or at the inexpensive eateries nearby. Each residence hall also has a small shared kitchen facility which the residents may use to prepare their own meals.
Students should note the residence halls have an early application deadline. Students who miss this deadline or choose to live elsewhere are responsible for their own housing.
Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
