Overview
Fundamentals of Wildlife Management in Tanzania
In this summer fundamentals course, the Serengeti becomes your classroom. Through safari drives and field excursions, the wildlife of Tanzania bring the critical challenges of wildlife management and conservation to life before your eyes.
- Embark on multi-day camping expedition to Serengeti National Park, with a stop at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area en route to learn about migratory corridors and explore the giant crater.
- Deepen your understanding of policy and legal frameworks’ influence on environmental conservation and wildlife management paradigms over time.
This summer program is worth 4 credits. Students can pair this program with SFS-Tanzania's summer session 2,
Carnivores of the African Plains. The combination of Summer Sessions 1 and 2 awards a total of 8 credits.

The program is open to Purdue students in good standing who have completed at least two semesters of university study by the start of the program. Successful candidates will demonstrate academic success, maturity, and a desire to experience another culture.

Academic Program
This academically rigorous program follows a six-day/week schedule. The interdisciplinary curriculum is designed to help students actively discover and understand the complexities of environmental, social, and economic issues in Tanzania.
Major academic themes include:
- Behavioral ecology
- Field ornithology
- Human-wildlife conflict
- Community conservation approaches
- Wildlife and natural resource management policies
You will take one 4-credit course. This course is participatory in nature and is designed to foster inquiry and active learning combining lectures, field exercises, assignments, and tests. This course is taught in English. Please see SFS website for full course information.
Attention liberal arts majors! Although credit is awarded by the College of Agriculture, the College of Liberal Arts will count this summer program as fulfilling your four-credit lab science requirement. Please speak to your study abroad advisor for more information!
Non-liberal arts majors should check with their academic advisor to see if this might fulfill their science requirement.
Excursions
You will visit different ecosystems and communities including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Manyara National Park, Maasai and other Indigenous communities, rural villages, freshwater wetlands, acacia forests, wildlife migratory corridors, and ranches and farms.
Housing
Learn to live the
pole pole lifestyle at SFS’ Moyo Hill Camp. Surrounded by Tanzania’s world-famous national parks and wildlife, it’s the perfect base camp for expeditions into the field. Campus is reminiscent of summer camp, with plenty of outdoor and communal spaces, while the small, friendly community of Rhotia is a short walk away.

Estimated Program Costs
Students pursuing program participation accept financial responsibility. Purdue will take measures to mitigate financial risks, although will not be liable for loss. Students should carefully note what costs need to be paid to Purdue University or to a co-sponsor or agency, and what costs need to be paid at the overseas study location. This will vary by program.
The program fee covers tuition, room and board, program-related ground transportation and park entrance fees, field equipment, supplies, and orientation for one four-week session.
The fees below are for the one 4-week summer session with SFS. Please speak to your study abroad advisor for the program costs for participation in two summer sessions with SFS.
SFS's program fee does not include the flight, spending money, inoculations, or visa.

Financial Aid
In order to qualify for financial aid (incl. loans), students need to register for at least six credits during the summer. Participating in only one of the two sessions in Tanzania will only result in four credits, therefore students planning to use summer aid will need to enroll in at least two more credits during the summer at Purdue.
